Subject: Elizabeth Taylor Birthday Bash

I haven't seen anybody mention about Elizabeth's Birthday celebration on TV this past Monday.

Even though Roddy wasn't apart of the tribute to her, he was in the audience. The camera did get him on film a few times while he was in the crowd. He was wearing his *red* scarf with those fancy cuffs like at the Academy Awards last year. Of course, he looked grand as usual.

What caused you to become an RM fan in 1965?

It was around this time that I formed my first memory of Roddy. My grandmother took me to see "That Darn Cat." (The original was so much better than the current remake.)

Paul,

Actually, Coudersport is about 2 hours away from Buffalo.

Have you ever been to Toronto? It's one of my favorite cities. The theatre is as good as New York and it's not as far away as London.

I was always a little different. My friends loved the regular teeny bopper movie stars. I loved old movies. So one day in 1965, I saw "Lassie Come Home" and I was hooked. I saw everything else with Roddy in it. I lived by the TV guide. There were no VCRs to record shows. You had to set your alarm for 3am. One time I stayed home "sick". How nice it is today.

You're not toooo far off then. I'm about 2 1/2 hours away from it. Toronto... Been there twice. First time was when I was in High School about 18 years ago. It was more of a ride thru town on the intersate headed north to north bay. (got cousins way up there)
Second time was last spring. My wife and i honeymooned there. That's why we're heading back this spring... to finish the celebration! We fell in love with it. (I'll still take Pittsburgh as my favorite city, but Toronto is definetly 2nd!!)
Hard to believe most anniversery is less that a month away. (March 30)

Have you been to the Web site that has alot of the list users bio's on it? Try out http://www.xmoppet.org/clan/whozzat.html. I'm on it!

He was interviewed in one of the tabloid shows about it. I don't usually watch those show, i just caught a glimpse of him while Helen was channel surfing. By the time she turned back, the interview was almost over.

I'm surprised no one else mentioned the Birthday telecast. Lots of inside jokes and some may have missed a lot just by not knowing Elizabeth better. The only real mention of Roddy that I caught ( and I may have missed more because I had to put my son to bed in the middle of the show) was during Lily Tomlin's awful number when she mentioned how lucky Roddy was (for being a close friend of Elizabeth's) and there was a close up of Roddy in the audience.

Paul,

I hope you and your wife enjoy your trip. If you get a chance check out Niagara-on-the-lake. It was voted the prettiest town in Canada and makes a nice stop off the QEW.

I want to go to London (hometown of you-know-who) for my vacation this year. Now, if I can just drag my husband away fron the funeral home..., Did I mention that he's a funeral director? It's an interesting life.

Checked out the members page. It makes a nice ad for Pizza Hut.

In response to Lynne's message; next time I get to Toronto, I'll be sure to look you up. We usually make the trip about once a year to visit "The Phantom of the Opera" (another of my passions, remind me to tell you all about the time Michael Crawford spoke to me and I nearly fell under a table).

I just wanted to say Welcome Back to two of our "past" members who were on temporary leave from the list due to assorted life and net access difficulties (which i'm sure they are each better at explaining than i).

TAMI, HEATHER... we got some new additions to the family while you were gone... Most recently, Cheryl and Mark, going a bit farther back there's Kevin and Janet and Heidi.

Also, how was the fantiscicon? Did he show up? I'm sorry I did not get to come. I really wanted to. I hope you did not drive to the airport to pick me up. I could not e-mail you because I was kicked off the net, I could not pay them anymore. I still owe them money. I hope you are not mad at me for not showing up, and I sincerley hope we are still friend's. Is your e-mail address still the same? This part is for Sally, could you give me your new e-mail address again? You see, I've tried to write to you and Roc. but it keeps coming back undeliverable. The same goes with the RMgroup e-mail address. I would like to have the new member's addresse's as well, if it's all right with them. Mine is TAMI32@JUNO.COM. If anyone else has changed their e-mail address, could you please send me the new ones? Thanks a lot

Sure, we could hold it here in the Erie/Buffalo area. It's about central from Sally, Kris, you and me. Rox can spend time on the plane with him as they fly out. Dana can have fly up and have her hotel room right next to him. And we'd all stay with Dana and party all night long.

I'm trying to imagine how I would word an invitation to "an intimate little dinner with 35 or so of your greatest fans"... ;->

Paul, on the other hand, had this to say:

> ----------------

> central from Sally, Kris, you and me. Rox can spend time on the
> plane with him as they fly out. Dana can have fly up and have her

To which Roxanne starts tapping her foot in a cartoonishly annoyed-like manner... wanting to know why it is that everytime I turn my back on you guys for even an instant yer trying to get me roped into some scheme that I'm just silly enough and stupid enough to actually try!?!?!?
Paul, I think *you* need to go back and re-read that little story of mine about the incident at Tiny Naylors... then just *try* to imagine me on an airplane sitting next to RM! When your done laughing, we can start a more "serious" discussion on the subject ;->

Honestly, though... this is not far off the mark from the sort of thing I have semi-secretly had in mind all along. I think our first step, though, should be getting him to acknowledge the group in some personal way... an e-mail message or snail mail message addressed to the entire "foundation".
I even have this pipe-dream of convincing him to agree to an online chat session... which is why I keep pushing list members here to get and familiarize themselves with the PowWow chat software (hint hint!!!)

Paul also wondered:

> Why does it seem I'm the only guy in this group? Hmmmmmm.... :)

Don't worry... you're not. Actually, Scott... who has been largely silent of late since losing him home net account (we took him off the list so he wouldn't get in trouble receiving all this crazy mail at work)(but i'm cc'ing this message to him so he'll know we're taking his name in vain...) Scott was the first "boy" to join the list. Then I recruited my friend, Matt, who has been too busy moving and falling in love lately to pay much attention to the rest of us mere mortals (hi matt!). There's also Kevin and Mark, two of our newer members who have also been TOO QUIET of late... and Brian... Jonathan and Steve are both, I believe, currently moving or changing access providers or something. Gary... hmmm... I don't know that we've ever received many messages from Gary, though he was been with the list for quite some time. Arlo had to leave the list for a while (i forget why), but he used to make his presence know with a certain degree of regularity....
So, really, it's not a shortage of males, Paul... yer just the most talkative! ;->

And, on that happy note... I think I shall wrap this all up.

      Until next time!

You'll be belted down, Roc, so you can't jump up and down in the plane aisle. On the other hand, you'll probably still be shaking so hard that the pilot will announce, "We seem to be passing through some air turbulence, folks." Hmm, no newspaper dispensers but you can bang your fists on any passing cart. That should make a good impression on RM. Maybe you should consider passing out.

And don't ask me to come along, I'll probably pass out too. Oh yeah, I can just imagine RM having an intimate little dinner with 35 or so unconscious fans.

Can Powwow run on 16-bit Win 3.x? Or just on Win95? I don't even know if the university has an IRC client. It can "talk" - does that mean it has an IRC client? (never mind, I just checked - we don't have an IRC client)

Subject: RM as child advisor

Hi group,

Paul asked a question back in July '96:

"Many, many years ago, Roddy was a 'child' advisor much as Ann Landers is today. His replies to the problems of the kids back then can be found in what comic book?"

Well, it took sometime to find the answer(quite accidental too) but I did indeed with Mel's help. She was surfing and ran across this Comic Art Collection from the Michigan State University Libraries. It had the book Ron Goulart's Great History of Comic Books listed with RM's name and a issue of True Comics. I was able to get this book from *my* public library and see what it said about RM.

Roddy McDowall was a Junior Advisory Editor for "True Comics" back in 1942, he replaced Mickey Rooney.

I don't know how long he was a editor though.

Paul, where did you hear about this originally from?

That's ok, Paul. You don't have to like Barry. Actually, I don't care much for Copacabana myself. I enjoy hearing it in concert, but I *never* listen to the record.

Paul,

Shame on you. I think it was Rolling Stone that called Barry "the master showman of our generation." Although, in your defense, if there ever was a song that could drive someone over the edge, it's "Copacabana."

Dana, I think the Barry fans should plan to meet in Las Vegas next time he's there. We could also have a mini RM convention and visit the movie museum at the Debbie Reynolds casino.

If the Buffalo thing ever comes off we'll need a bus. One with reclining seats for all of those who plan to pass out. We'll have to work on that visa, Mel.

Hi, all!
Just got my system back up and running-major hard drive and OS crash, resulting in replacement of lots of stuff. YUCK!
Been watching all the dialogue about Buffalo and RM... I don't plan on unconsciousness personally. I see a lot of celebraties in Savannah with all the movies being filmed in the area. Kenneth Branaugh just left and we have Clint Eastwood here now to prepare for "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." (I'm hoping to get in that as an extra, since I knew Jim Williams and Danny Hansford.)
Rosie O'Donnell (SP?) makes fun of St. Joseph Hospital in the HBO thing she did last year and Demi Moore wants to buy a house in the area. Roseanne is threatening to buy a farm just outside of Savannah. But, alas, no Roddy yet... Maybe with "Midnight."

Sounds like a great idea to me! Did you know that his annual fan club convention is usually held in Vegas? This year it will be held in Memphis and Nashville instead.

While I would never admit to this in public (since i'm a *closet* manilow fan), I was very impressed by a couple of televised/recorded concerts of his I saw... Even though my last three trips to Vegas had to be cancelled at the last moment, I'd could get into planning to go to a concert -- and I never have visited Reynolds's movie museum. I wouldn't want to take RM to Vegas, though, it would be too easy to lose him in a crowd...

As one who practically lives in RM's backyard, I'm all in favor of moving this mythical (but quite entertaining!) convention out here to sunny California... after all, RM might not *want* to travel all that way (especially not with a plane load of lunatics like us!)

To tell you the truth, I think an ambulance might be more in order ... No, that'd be too small -- maybe an Army surplus medical evacuation vehicle. After all, some of us may not be conscious when the plane lands -- and Roddy himself might well have gone into shock and sensory overload... Better have lots of oxygen on hand, just to be on the safe side.

Evil and ugly rumor, Sally, I swa'n. I'm not getting any older, 'kay?

Incidentally -- I caught IT on AMC when it ran recently, after having not seen it for quite a few years. What a fun movie! What a fun guy! I'd almost forgotten... What an uncanny ability he has to make even less-than-sterling material just shine. There used to be plenty of Roddy movies that I'd be able to say, "Eh, don't much care for that one," about, but now as I revisit them more and more I do find that *he's* quite simply worth watching. He *does* make the movies, yes? And I mean, not just bearable , but actually worth watching. Wow.

Did I see, too, that MOLLY AND ME is going to be broadcast? That really is one of my favs. Hope anybody who hasn't seen it gets to, now. And report your impressions, 'kay? I'm just so in love with this flick that it's almost scary... (My housemate can quote right along, in her sleep, unintentionally)

Subject: That toast of RM to ET

Hi everyone,

I saw this on the Hollywood Gossip.com page.

http://www.hollywoodnetwork.com/gossip/board.html

                           Hollywood Gossip

                       Hosted by Cathy Griffin

"I hope for you a life, finally, without pain, and lasting good
health,"-- so toasted Roddy McDowall to his lifelong friend Elizabeth
Taylor following the taping of her 65th birthday party Sunday night. I
couldn't wish anything more for Ms. Taylor who is expected to undergo
brain surgery this week. The movie legend has gone under the knife too
many times to mention. It was thrilling for me to share in her
birthday gala which will air on ABC next Tuesday. She looked gorgeous
in Valentino. It was an elegant evening full of stars, terrific film
clips from her career, tempestuous personal life and a montage of
scenes from her 55 years in Hollywood that remind us what a remarkably
full life she has led. The night began with Roseanne's entrance as
Cleopatra, brought on stage by four hunks in turbans. Whoopi
Goldberg's pre-taped ditty was a scream as she was all decked out in
faux jewels poking good-humored fun at E.T. Michael Jackson who was
Taylor's date for the evening sang a schmaltzy number called
"Elizabeth" (which he did not write -- despite stories to the
contrary). He did his usual stomp of foot look up into the spotlight
ala "Jesus Christ Superstar" -- and there was not the hysterics in the
audience that Michael has been used to. The King of Pop must have been
miserable watching Patti Labelle's rendition of "You are So Beautiful"
and "Where You Lead" leave the audience breathless. The standing
ovation and applause was greater for her than Michael. Like a child
Michael vyed for the attention of every performer and presenter as he
sat next to Taylor on the front row. It was a who's who list on stage:
Cher (looking ravishing with fuller hair and an elegant grey-ish gown,
Rod Stewart, Harry Connick Jr., David Copperfield (he brought E.T. on
stage and made her famous Krupp diamond disappear, then brought it
back), Claudia Schiffer, Hugh Grant and gal pal Liz Hurley who looked
like she had stopped down the street at Fredrick's of Hollywood for
her hideous black lace see-through number that could have just as
easily been more appropriate on Divine Brown. Say...couldn't Liz have
squeezed an outfit out of Estee Lauder. Tacky! Tacky! Best dressed
goes to Christine Baranskie for her hot pink sequined dress that
showed she has a figure better than Barbie. I told her afterwards that
she had inspired me to stay on the Phen-fen! Madonna was a surprise
guest brought in at the end to bring Elizabeth onto the stage. Michael
Jackson had tried to find out over the weekend who was introducing
Taylor but no one connected with the show wanted to tell him Ms. M
would be doing the honors for fear his ongoing rivalry with her would
cause him to pull out at the last minute. He really kissed up to her
big time!. Could it be that Michael knows he's really over in the
United States and that Madonna has succeeded in being close to
acceptance in the movie world. I know she will always be a bit eau
autraire but at least she is not considered a freak! With his curly
locks and painted face he looked like a 'big girl' next to Taylor! As
much affection and a certain affinity I have with E.T., I cannot
understand what keeps her friendship alive with Jackson!!! It's
obvious he needs her right now. Did you notice how he twirled her
around and around on the way inside the theater making sure not one
camera missed photographing them together. My question for Michael is
how he could leave his wife and less than a week old son at home alone
and for Elizabeth I wonder why she had to have Michael escort her.
Roddy McDowall, her friend of almost 60 years was a logical choice --
if he wasn't "current" enough then there were lots of other choices.
She could have had her pick of famous, hip male escorts. It's not like
there aren't enough Baldwin brothers to go around either -- so what
gives with this bizarre relationship. How many times can these two go
over their unhappy childhoods???!!!

And Janeen's comment is ...

Hawaii sounds good.

But seriously - I'm planning a big trip in June/July 1999. Because of the distances involved travelling from Australia - when we go somewhere we make it worth our while (return airfares from Brisbane to LA are about $1500 - $1800). I'll be travelling with 2 friends and we'll fly into LA, then I'll be staying with a friend in Portland, then joining up with my friends for a Star Trek Cruise around Alaska (SeaTrek) and then we plan to travel across Canada and end up in Toronto (and seeing Lynne Ackerman) where we'll part company and then I'll visit friends on the East Coast (New Hampshire and Rhode Island). So if I'm travelling anywhere, where I can meet up with any RM fans - please let me know. I'd love to meet as many of you as I can.

Janeen from the land Down Under
and aren't we proud of Geoffrey Rush winning that Oscar (he's from Toowoomba - a couple of hours drive from Brisbane!)

Subject: Convention

O.K. I've got it! If the convention has to be in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, let's go to Hawaii. We could meet Roddy on the beach. At least those of us who will pass out will get a chance to work on our tans.

Seriously, I would consider coming to Las Vegas for a mini RM convention/Barry Manilow concert. I attended a convention of the Michael Crawford fan club when he was out there at the MGM Grand and it was wild. I've never been to Debbie Reynolds' museum. I wonder if she has any of Roddy's artifacts.

Finally, Paul, I'M ONLY 34!! Barry Manilow has only been around since the 70's. I was 13 when I bought my first Barry Manilow record.

Hi Gang!

Well, after spending over an hour determining that the lady at the information number had given us the wrong address, we finally found the Academy Village and theatre... and also discovered that she was mistaken when she told us the event was sold out.
For RM factor, the evening was a bit of a let down. He spoke for only 10-15 minutes, then disappeared after introducing a montage of Chuck Jones cartoons. Jones himself wasn't there either, doctor's orders, so as a consolation we got to see a "world premiere" of the sequel to "One Froggy Evening" -- the *wonderful* "Another Froggy Evening".
RM looked and sounded wonderful, but there was no chance to speak to him as, like I said above, he ducked out during the cartoon montage. Oh well. At least I got there this time!

Subject: Oscar show

According to a Dayton Daily News article (Tue, Mar 25 1997, GREENERY GROWS ON OSCAR CROWD), RM was at the Oscar show. Excerpts from the article:

The grande dames stayed conservative: Lauren Bacall, Julie Andrews
and Debbie Reynolds kept to basic black. Designers' names were
quick off the lips: Faye Dunaway replied `Armani' to a question
about her win for Network. And Armani it was, with a nod to Donna
Karan, which went far, being Tim Robbins and Susan Sarandon who did
the nodding. And if green was acceptable, best-actress nominee
Brenda Blethyn looked refreshingly different, outrageous even,
wearing - of all things - yellow.

Only Roddy McDowall kept the faith, answering `I never tell' to the
question of the night: `Who are you wearing?'

Subject: Roddy on Oscar Pre-Show

Since no one has mentioned it yet (unless it's in a post I haven't gotten to yet...I'm still enormously behind!), I just wondered if I was the only one who saw Roddy on the E! Oscar pre-show? He was with Kate Burton, Richard and Sybil Burton's daughter. (Anyone else watch the series she did a few years ago? I think it was called something like "Home Fires", or had "Home" in the title somewhere anyways. Unfortunately it only lasted for a few episodes (although I thought it was pretty good), but I do have them on tape...somewhere !! I think she's mostly doing theatre these days though, and not much TV or movies.) Both of them looked really great, BTW.

At any rate, Joan Rivers interviewed Roddy when he came in, but it wasn't much, just basically saying to the audience, this is Roddy McDowall. Roddy introduced Kate, but I don't think Joan even realized who she was! She didn't react at all, or talk to Kate. Of course _I_ went nuts because I'm one of Richard and Elizabeth's greatest fans, and whenever I get to see any of their kids it just makes my day! And of course I recognized Kate immediately when they showed her and Roddy as they arrived! (And I'm sure the people who live in the next apartment must have wondered what was going on when I suddenly screamed out, 'oh, my God, it's Roddy and Kate !!')
