Subject: Poseidon Adventure

Roc and I had a Powwow last week and we got to chatting about The Poseidon Adventure. We couldn't agree on how RM's character, Acres, died in the film. Was he killed by the fall, or did he drown?

Opinions, anyone?

oh man! ok this is how it went down, there was an explosion and he fell off the ladder into the water below, now obviously the water was hot cause there was steam coming from it,so he died instantly from the burning hot water. so he drown. hugs,

tami.

I vote for the fall. At least he must have been knocked unconcious by it or he would have resurfaced. My mom was lucky enough to get to hear my 20 minute tirade when I first saw the movie. I stopped the tape because I was so upset. That was the first time I remember seeing him in a movie.

The fall knocked him unconscious and then he drowned.
(Actually, I don't really know, but it sounded good.)

Subject: Re: Poseidon Adventure

Well guys,
I have often thought of that very thing. I was 9 years old when I saw it and I used to try to think of ways that Acres could have survived.
I think that he possibly could have survived. His injury was not that bad and, although the water was deep, Ernest Borgnine's character went after him. However, it was at that moment that an explosion occured and more water boiled and roiled in that smoke stack they were passing through or climbing up (which, if the ship was turned up-right, they would be climbing down) and Ernest Borgnine's character had to struggle to pull himself up.
So, was he killed by the fall or did he drown?--Both. He would not have drown if he had not fallen in the first place.
Or did the explosion occur and cause him to fall? Either way, I'm sure he sucked down mass quantities of water so, he did drown.
Anyway, these are my thoughts on the matter.

I always thought the water was steaming hot (from the boilers going out)--sorry to be so gruesome. But, maybe I'm not analyzing it correctly.

Anyway, that's always the real bummer in the movie. I still watch it thinking that part will change (I also keep thinking Jennifer Jones won't fall off the elevator in "Towering Inferno". I guess I'm just weird.)

I assumed that he drowned; because if you notice when he fell, he didn't hit anything but the water.

I always assumed that Acres (RM's character) was killed by the fall. We see Gene Hackman go into the water after him, but Roddy never resurfaces.

I definitely think that he drown. After multiple rewinds of the tape, it is apparent that Ernest Borgenine did a terrible job of trying to "save" Roddy!

Acres already had an injured leg and when the explosion jolted the already capsized ship, he fell from the ladder andinto the water and aparantly drowned.

BTW, trivia, can anyone tell me the correlation between the Poseidon Adventure and Funny Lady?

Subject: Where RM rents videos

Excerpt from "Survival of the Niches", an article about video retailers written by Doug Desjardins for Video Store Magazine:

The Continental Shop ... doesn't stock films from any of the major studios and doesn't even have a section for new releases.

"We're the ultimate in niche retailers, the nichiest of the niche," says Brian Clewer, who has owned the Santa Monica, Calif., store since 1964. "We carry only British products ranging from sitcoms to old silent films dating back to 1920."

Clewer has more than 6,000 British video titles, which has made his store a favorite haunt for state-bound Brits in the film industry.

"Angela Lansbury and Roddy McDowall are in here all the time," Clewer says. "John Frankenheimer also comes in a lot to look through our stuff."

So now we know where RM rents videos. That is, assuming the place is still open (the article is dated 09-07-1997).

Subject: Re: Poseidon Adventure

I loved the Poseidon Adventure, even though Roddy is quickly taken out of the picture. My guess is that he died when the shaft blew up. I don't know a lot about ships, but the water appeared to be hot. Anyway, he couldn't have died from the fall, since Ernest Borgnine jumps from about the same height in an attempt to rescue him. A better question would be why Ernest didn't bite it when the shaft explodes (and why didn't they do

everyone a favor, and drop that dippy singer off the ladder too?!!!)

Was anyone able to watch (and tape) 'Louise Brooks: Looking for Lulu' at TCM last May 5?

I think he probably drowned because he couldn't use the one leg and he would have needed both to swim against the heavy water flow. Of course, he could have hit his head underwater. They don't show his body, so we're left to assume. I always figured that he got flushed into one of the airshafts that were submerged.
My two cents worth :-)

Subject: hey! fright night

I just read the 1985 review of "Fright Night." I'm a little bummed out that you disgarded Stephen Geoffrey's performance. McDowall is certainly a fine craftsman and I thought everything that was written about him in this review was "right on." But I just watched this movie and truly felt that Stephen Geoffreys (the crackly voiced friend) resonated distinction in an easily cliche role.

I really thought Geoffreys displayed surprising acting ability when he was caught in the alley, and all his bravado dissolved and his insecurities surfaced. With out a word. He even shed a few tears, I think. Though he had less screen presence comepared to the other actors, I found him most memorable.

Tell me what you thought about this actor (maybe you think I'm an idiot!)

Take care (what a great review, though!)
